HL Deb 04 April 1990 vol 517 cc1506-7WA
Lord O'Hagan

asked Her Majesty's Government:

What is the purpose of ministerial visits to the European Parliament in Strasbourg.

Lord Brabazon of Tara

We maintain close links with the European Parliament, and with other EC institutions, and believe that this contributes to mutually beneficial inter-institutional relations and enhances the efficiency and effectiveness of Community decision-making.

Lord O'Hagan

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether, in each of the last five years, more Ministers have visited the European Parliament in Strasbourg from the UK than from any other member state.

Lord Brabazon of Tara

Details of visits to the European Parliament by Ministers of other EC member states over the last five years could only be obtained at disproportionate cost. Government Ministers pay regular visits to the European Parliament.

Lord O'Hagan

asked Her Majesty's Government:

How many UK Ministers have visited the European Parliament in (i) Strasbourg and (ii) Brussels in each of the last five years; and to estimate the cost of these visits for each year.

Lord Brabazon of Tara

Details of visits by members of the Government to the European Parliament are contained in successive editions of the six-monthly White Paper on Developments in the European Community, copies of which are available in the Library of the House. The other information requested could only be provided at disproportionate cost.
