HC Deb 26 October 1989 vol 158 c606W
17. Mr. Squire

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he will report on Government initiatives to curb drinking in the street.

Mr. John Patten

The experimental byelaw, which prohibits the consumption of alcohol in designated public places, is now in force in seven areas. The operation of the byelaw is being closely monitored by participating local authorities, the police and the Home Office. The results so far are encouraging. The byelaw has maintained its initial popularity and continues to be generally complied with. There have been 10 prosecutions, with 11 pending.
