HC Deb 23 October 1989 vol 158 cc323-4W
Mrs. Maureen Hicks

To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Science what are the resource implications of allowing children to remain in school out of school hours in order to allow more women to return to work.

Mrs. Rumbold

None for schools' budgets. The Department's recent letter on this subject to local education authorities and schools specifies that school-based child care schemes must be provided on at least a full cost recovery basis as far as the school is concerned. This is because, under local management of schools, school budgets may not be used to subsidise non-school activities.
