To ask the Minister for the Arts what is the present budgeted cost for the completion of the new British Library.

Mr. Luce

As I reported to the House last November, Phase IA of the new British Library at St. Pancras is currently under construction, and is to be built within a cost target in cash of £300 million. Additionally, a completion state which is at present being designed, has been budgeted at £90 million at second quarter 1988 prices.
