§ Mrs. Gillian ShephardPrecise figures are not available, but it is possible to estimate the number of full-time equivalent posts on the basis of records of staff time expended by this Department on social security benefit fraud-related work. The number of full-time equivalent posts is 3,335. Estimated salary costs are now some £43 million in a full year. There are in addition some costs for travel and subsistence. The estimated savings achieved as a result of the Department's anti-fraud efforts in 1988–89 totalled £262 million.
