Mr. Rowlands

To ask the Secretary of State for Wales (1) how many hip operations he expects the treatment centre at Rhydlafar to carry out in its first year;

(2) how many patients at present waiting for hip operations at the Prince Charles hospital, Merthyr Tydfil, he expects will receive their operations at the Rhydlafar treatment centre in its first full year;

(3) what is the estimated cost to establish and run the proposed three treatment centres under the National Health Service.

Welsh Office staff are currently finalising the details of operation of treatment centres in discussion with managers and clinicians in the National Health Service. Subject to the satisfactory conclusion of these discussions, I shall write to the hon. Gentleman shortly.
