§ Mr. McAllionTo ask the Secretary of State for Scotland if he will list the capital spend on(a) primary schools and (b) secondary schools within the local authority education system in Scotland in each year since 1978 to 1989 up to and including 1988–89; and give these figures both at outturn prices and expressed at 1988–89 prices.
§ Mr. LangThe information available is given in the following table, which has been compiled from local authority financial returns. Expenditure on primary and secondary schools is not separately identified in these returns. The reduction in expenditure in real terms during the period reflects a substantial and progressive decline in pupil numbers.
