§ Lord James Douglas-Hamilton[holding answer 9 May 1989]: Information on trunk road schemes costing over £1 million is given in the following tables. Costs have not been provided for planned starts on an individual basis as these will vary depending on a scheme's actual year of start and other factors, but the total value of planned starts is estimated to be around £1,200 million. In addition to the schemes listed, a substantial number of schemes costing less than £1 million have been completed (to the value of approximately £70 million), are in progress or planned. On a small proportion of these a private sector contribution was made or is a possibility. It would require disproportionate effort to list all minor schemes completed since May 1979, in progress and planned.
In the same period some £1,097 million has been spent on new construction and improvement, including structural maintenance, of local roads (this total includes a provisional figure for 1987–88 and an estimate for 1988–89). Information on specific local schemes is not held centrally. Provision for the current and two following years is planned to be about £140 million in each year.
