HC Deb 15 May 1989 vol 153 c73W
Mr. Ashley

To ask the Secretary of State for Social Security how many nuclear test veterans or their widows have received payments because of suffering or death from(a) leukaemia and (b) multiple myeloma; how many have applied and been rejected; and what are the criteria for acceptance.

Mr. Peter Lloyd

One war disablement pension and six war widow's pensions have been awarded because service men who took part in nuclear tests contracted or died of leukaemia (excluding chronic lymphatic leukaemia) or multiple myeloma. The criteria for the award of a pension are that the service man contracted, or died of, either of these two conditions and was present at a nuclear test and therefore no claims which satisfy these criteria are rejected.
