HL Deb 08 May 1989 vol 507 c538WA
The Earl of Lindsey and Abingdon

asked Her Majesty's Government:

What is their current policy toward British trade with, and investment in, the Republic of Bophuthatswana.

Lord Young of Graffham

Since Her Majesty's Government considers Bophuthatswana to be part of South Africa, our policy on trade and investment towards South Africa applies. That policy is in essence that, within the limits of our international obligations and undertakings, trade and investment should be determined by the commercial judgment of those engaged in it. South Africa is an important trading partner for the UK and we are the leading foreign investor there.
