HC Deb 04 May 1989 vol 152 cc187-8W
Mr. Gale

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport (1) if he will detail the objectives of his Department's central London traffic surveys;

(2) what will be the estimated cost of his Department's central London traffic surveys.

Mr. Peter Bottomley

Statistical surveys of traffic are undertaken on a regular basis in London in order to machines during peak periods, and as to whether staff are instructed to open the gates of the machines to relieve congestion.

Mr. Portillo

Station staff have strict instructions to open the gates if there is any threat to safety from congestion building up behind them.
