To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Science what percentage of secondary teachers are(a) graduates without a postgraduate teachers certificate and (b) instructors.

Graduates without initial teacher training in the United Kingdom were 7 per cent. of all full-time qualified teachers in maintained secondary schools in England in March 1986.

Instructors and student teachers represented 0.8 per cent. of the total full-time equivalent of all teachers and instructors in these schools in January 1988.
