HC Deb 23 March 1989 vol 149 cc704-5W
Mr. Redmond

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport if he will list information available to him on all the plans by(a) British Rail and (b) other undertakings to improve transport infrastructure in the Yorkshire region in the period before the opening of the Channel tunnel; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Portillo

Plans for infrastructure investment in railways, roads, ports, airports and other passenger transport facilities in the Yorkshire and Humberside region are too numerous to list. Major schemes include the electrification of the east coast main line; resignalling in the York area and from Northallerton to Berwick; and 29 national trunk road schemes.

There are many other schemes which have not yet been finalised. British Rail is still working on the plan which it is required to publish by the end of the year, in compliance with section 40 of the Channel Tunnel Act 1987, setting out its proposals for Channel tunnel passenger and freight services and any associated infrastructure.
