§ Mr. Harry GreenwayTo ask the Secretary of State for Transport what conclusions he has reached on the recommendations of his Department's scrutiny of the railway inspectorate.
§ Mr. PortilloSince this scrutiny was completed in 1987, we have consulted interested organisations on its many recommendations and I have had the advice of chief inspecting officer, who was appointed in 1988. I am now placing in the Library of the House a note setting out the action that is being taken. Most of the recommendations of the review are being followed up; only four are rejected. I am proposing to review whether any further changes are needed in the interests of efficiency and effectiveness, across all the functions performed by the inspectorate.
