HL Deb 15 March 1989 vol 505 cc327-8WA
Lord Kennet

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether they will examine the propriety of an insurance company paying £791 million to the owners of the Piper Alpha oil platform if it emerges in the inquiry now being conducted that all required safety regulations were not fully complied with.

The Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State, Department of Energy (Baroness Hooper)

The terms of insurance contracts, and the sums paid in accordance with these terms, are matters for the insurers and the insured. The Government will therefore not be intervening.
