To ask the Secretary of State for Health if he will specify the number of residential homes(a) in the private sector, (b) owned by local authorities and (c) run by health authorities.

Information on the number of residential care homes in the private sector and of those owned by local authorities for years prior to 31 March 1987 is published in "Residential Accommodation for Elderly and Younger Physically Handicapped People: All Residents in Local Authority, Voluntary and Private Homes Year ending 31 March 1986" and "Homes and Hostels for Mentally Ill and Mentally Handicapped People, at 31 March 1986"; copies of which are available in the Library. Provisional information as at 31 March 1987 is given in the table. Health authorities have no powers to run residential care homes.
