asked Her Majesty's Government:

What is the proposed manpower establishment for the state veterinary service for 1989–90, 1990–91 and 1991–92.

Baroness Trumpington

The manpower planning level for the state veterinary service as at 1st April 1989 was 1,503. The level of manpower to be provided for in future years remains to be decided in the light of circumstances, including public expenditure priorities.

By how many posts is the state veterinary service under establishment at the present time.

Baroness Trumpington

One hundred and forty three, covering all grades and units of the state veterinary service. Of these, 45 are in veterinary grades.
