To ask the Secretary of State for Wales (1) what is the current acreage of the Forestry Commission in Wales;

(2) what is the estimated acreage in Wales of Forestry Commission land planted with (i) broadleaves, and (ii) conifers; and if he will make a statement.

At 31 March 1989 the Forestry Commission managed the following areas of land in Wales:

Broadleaved woodland 6,000
Conifer woodland 124,000
Other land 13,000
Total 143,000

The estimated value of the Forestry Commission's fixed assets in Wales at 31 March 1988 was as followsPlantations (land, roads and timber) £440 million. Other tangible assets (land, buildings, machinery, plant and equipment) £11 million.
