Mr. Kirkwood

To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Science if he will publish the amount of money spent on medical research in each of the last 10 years broken down into (a) the total figure per year, (b) the percentage spent on AIDS and (c) as a percentage of the total research budget.

In addition, universities and medical schools support a range of medical research, including AIDS research, from block grants provided by the Universities Funding Council (formerly the University Grants Committee). Other medical research is supported by the health authorities.
