To ask the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food how many breweries have closed down and their sites used for other purposes in the past 10 years.

The information requested by my hon. Friend is not available. Customs and Excise statistics indicate that there are currently 260 working breweries in the United Kingdom compared with 191 on 1 January 1980. These figures reflect both closures and newly established breweries over this period. Further information may be obtained from the Brewers' Society's statistical handbook.
