HL Deb 27 July 1989 vol 510 cc1672-3WA
Lord William of Elvel

asked Her Majesty's Government:

What steps, if any, the Bank of England Banking Supervision Division took in the latter part of 1987, to ascertain whether or not National Westminster Bank plc was, either itself or through its subsidiaries, engaging in activities inconsistant with the conduct of a bank recognised under the Banking Act 1986.

The Paymaster General (The Earl of Caithness)

The extent to which the Bank was informed of the activities of the National Westminster Bank Group in relation to the shares of Blue Arrow plc is described in the inspectors' report published on 20th July 1989. It is not the practice to comment on action taken by the Banking Supervision Division of the Bank of England in relation to individual cases.
