§ Mr. AllenTo ask the Secretary of State for Health what is his assessment of the implications of the Single European Act in 1992 on the health care provided in Britain.
§ Mr. MellorThe Single European Act (SEA) commits the European Community to the aim of progressively establishing a single market by the end of 1992. The provision of heal th care is not directly affected by the SEA and remains a domestic matter. There are however a number of proposals concerned with the free movement of goods, services and people throughout the Community, which may have an indirect effect on health. The main areas affected by European Community legislation and legislative processes are pharmaceuticals, medical equipment, tobacco products and the mutual recognition of professional qualifications.
