§ 46. Mr. Jacques ArnoldTo ask the Secretary of State for Energy what improvements in thermal efficiency have been achieved in the past 10 years.
§ Mr. Peter MorrisonThe efficiency of the nation's energy use has improved greatly over the past 10 years. In 1978 the United Kingdom consumed 1.23 tonnes of coal equivalent per £1,000 of GDP (at 1985 factor cost). In 1988 this had fallen to 1 tonne of coal equivalent per £1,000 of GDP in the same price terms, a reduction of 18.7 per cent. over the period.
