§ Sir Dudley SmithTo ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer (1) how many individuals in the United Kingdom had an earned income of £50,000 or more per annum at the last analysis;
(2) how many individuals in the United Kingdom have an annual earned income of (a) over £500,000 per year, (b) £300,000 per year, (c) £200,000 per year and (d) £100,000 given the most up-to-date Inland Revenue figures.
§ Mr. Norman LamontThe latest data cover 1986–87, when it is estimated that about 78,000 individuals had earned income of over £50,000 and about 15,000 had earned income of over £100,000. It is difficult to make reliable estimates at higher levels of earned income, but there were probably not more than about 3,000 individuals with earned income exceeding £200,000.
