HC Deb 13 July 1989 vol 156 c621W
Mr. David Nicholson

To ask the Secretary of State for Social Security if he will list in theOfficial Report the various measures taken since 1986 to assist single parent families.

Mr. Peter Lloyd

The needs of lone parents were recognised in the social security reforms introduced last year. As well as the family premium, income support and housing benefit have a lone parent premium. In family credit the adult rate for married couples also applies to lone parents. From April families with children who receive income-related benefit had increases over and above those needed to restore their real value of 50p a child.

Unmarried mothers seeking maintenance will also benefit from changes made by the Family Law Reform Act.
