HC Deb 13 July 1989 vol 156 c638W
28. Mr. Cryer

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he will make a statement on the Law Commission recommendation regarding the law of blasphemy.

Mr. Hurd

In its 1985 report on offences against religion and public worship, the Law Commission recommended —by a majority—that common law offences of blasphemy and blasphemous libel should be abolished and not replaced. A minority proposed in a note of dissent the creation of a new statutory offence of blasphemy applying to all religions. The Government have no plans to legislate on blasphemy.
