To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland how many warrant sales were granted each year from 1979 in Scotland; and if he will make a statement.

The numbers of warrants of sale and reports of warrant sales from 1979 to 1987 (the latest year for which figures are available) are set out in the table below.

To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland if he will take steps to abolish warrant sales in Scotland.

Arrangements for the enforcement of court decrees for debt were recently reformed in the Debtors (Scotland) Act 1987 following a detailed review by the Scottish Law Commission. The Government have no plans at present for further major reform of these arrangements.
