To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Science if he will raise with the governing body of the university of Newcastle the recent actions of Newcastle university students union in breach of section 43 of the Education Act (No. 2) 1986.

I deplore attempts to restrict the rights of particular students and visitors. I understand that the proposal was unacceptable to the university of Newcastle-upon-Tyne and that the union's trustees, whose approval was required, have since refused to endorse the amendment.
