Mr. Kennedy

To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland if he will list by subject(a) the number of students in Scotland currently enrolled on teacher training courses and (b) the number of available places on teacher training courses in Scotland for the current academic year and the projected number for the forthcoming academic year; and if he will make a statement on any shortfall in particular subject areas of students enrolling for teacher training courses in Scotland.

My right hon. and learned Friend prescribes the overall number of places to be provided for each teacher training course in the colleges of education, but does not determine limits for subject specialism which may be offered within postgraduate secondary courses. The balance of subject specialisms is determined by individual colleges of education in consultation with their local education authorities.

The information requested is set out in the table below. There is no shortfall in the numbers enrolled for this
