Mr. Blunkett

To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment whether the economic development initiatives announced in his answer to the hon. Member for Battersea (Mr. Bowis) on 21 December will affect facilities available under the city grant initiative for deficit funding.

Mr. Trippier

No. City grant, which is paid directly by my Department to private sector developers meets the shortfall between the market value and the capital costs of appropriate private sector development projects. It does not cover a company's trading deficits or running costs.
