HC Deb 10 January 1989 vol 144 c620W
Mr. Gordon Brown

To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer how much tax is paid annually by zero rate tax payers on bank and building society interest.

Mr. Norman Lamont

In 1987–88, about £450 million of the composite rate tax accounted for by building societies, banks and other deposit-takers was due in respect of interest that would not have been liable to tax in the hands of its recipients in the absence of a composite rate system.
