To ask the Secretary of State for Health what was the amount spent on hospital building for the National Health Service in 1979 and at the latest available year in real terms.

Capital expenditure includes the acquisition of land and buildings, the cost of new building construction and major adaptations to existing buildings together with associated professional fees, equipment and engineering work costs. It also includes general expenditure on the purchase of all vehicles and other major items of equipment.
  2. 2. HCHS includes hospital, community health, ambulance, blood transfusion and other services.
  3. 3. The 1978–79 figures have been expressed at 1987–88 prices by the use of the gross domestic product deflator.
