To ask the Secretary of State for Health what was the number of day cases treated by the National Health Service in 1979 and in the latest available year.

During 1979, 592,000 day cases were treated in NHS hospitals in England whilst in 1987–88 the number had risen to 1,016,000 (provisional), an increase of 72 per cent.
