To ask the Secretary of State for Social Security, what evidence he has of any increased take-up in community care grants as against loans within the social fund budget.

Take up of community care grants has increased steadily over recent months. Expenditure in December 1988 was £3.9 million representing 79 per cent. of monthly profiled expenditure. Provisional figures for January 1989 show that expenditure increased to £5.1 million, representing 109 per cent. of monthly profiled expenditure. Expenditure on loans was £12.1 million in December 1988, representing 103 per cent. of monthly
