To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment what is the number of public inquiries held into planning proposals in the last year and their cost.

§ Mr. Chope
In 1988, 1,799 public inquiries into planning proposals were held. Financial information is not held in a form from which the cost to the Department of holding these inquiries can be extracted.
