To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Science what information he has on the number of applicants to take(a) GCSE in physical education in 1988 and (b) O-level or GCE in physical education in the five previous years.

In 1987, about 11,700 pupils in schools in England attempted CSE or GCE O-level examinations in physical education. Comparable information is not available in respect of previous years, nor yet centrally in respect of GCSE examinations taken in 1988.
