§ Mr. Crowther
To ask the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food what changes have taken place in Halal and Shechita slaughter since the publication of the Farm Animal Welfare Council report on the welfare of livestock when slaughtered by religious methods (1985).
§ Mr. Donald Thompson
[holding reply 14 February 1989]: There have been no changes to the statutory provisions governing the religious slaughter of animals. I have been considering representations on the Government's response of 29 October 1987 to the Farm Animal Welfare Council's report on religious slaughter. I expect to issue proposals for new regulations on the welfare of all animals at slaughter shortly.
