HC Deb 15 February 1989 vol 147 cc237-8W
20. Mr. Squire

To ask the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster if he will make a statement on the progress of his Department's inner cities initiatives.

Mr. Newton

The inner city task forces have made good progress in meeting their objectives of securing more jobs and training for local people and encouraging local enterprise. Since the task forces began their work in 1986 they have committed about £33 million in support of nearly 1,100 projects. These will generate, or safeguard, nearly 4,000 jobs, facilitate over 23,500 training places and provide support for over 2,600 businesses. Over 450 private sector companies have supported task force projects.

66. Mr. Curry

To ask the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster what contact he has had with voluntary organisations regarding their work in inner city regeneration.

Mr. Newton

I am in regular contact with voluntary organisations and am well aware of their important contribution to urban regeneration. Since taking up my post as Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster I have had meetings with the National Council of Voluntary Organisations, and Outset, and I have spoken at Save the Children and Community Projects Foundation functions.
