To ask the Secretary of State for Employment how many factory inspectors there were to enforce the Health and Safety at Work Regulations in each of the years 1986, 1987, 1988 and at the present time, respectively.

On 1 April in each year the total number of factory inspectors responsible for enforcing health and safety at work regulations, who are employed in the Health and Safety Executive's area offices, were:

In addition to those employed in area offices, at 1 February 1989, a total of 77 factory inspectors were working elsewhere in HSE, in management work in factory inspectorate headquarters, or contributing to policy and standards development. Recruitment to the factory inspectorate is currently under way.
