To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs if he will make a statement on current progress on the Lome IV negotiations.

Negotiations on a successor to the third Lome convention, which expires in February 1990, were opened formally in October last year. The first EC-ACP ministerial negotiating meeting, which I shall be attending, is in Brazzaville later this week.
