To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs if he will make a statement on the outcome of the field tests of the new manual to help project managers decide how much environmental assessment is required in the case of each aid project.

The draft manual was field tested by Overseas Development Administration staff on visits to a number of countries and was found to be a useful tool for helping to assess environmental concerns. Comments and suggestions for improvements in substance and format, from staff and from over 50 international bodies and non-governmental organisations, are being incorporated in the final version.
