To ask the Secretary of State for Employment when he last met the chief inspector of mines; and what subjects were discussed;

[holding answer 6 February 1989]: My right hon. Friend has not met the chief inspector of mines. The chief inspector, as a senior official of the Health and Safety Executive, has frequent contact with the director general, and opportunity for contact with the chairman of the Health and Safety Commission.
