HC Deb 03 February 1989 vol 146 cc423-4W
Mr. Greg Knight

To ask the Secretary of State for Energy what is the land use impact of electricity produced by nuclear power compared to that used by coal.

Mr. Michael Spicer

The CEGB advises me that the construction process of an 1,800 MW coal-fired power station equipped with FGD plant requires some 100 hectares of land of which about half would be retained for operational use. The construction process of a 1,200 MW PWR nuclear power station requires some 75 hectares of which about a third would be retained for operational use.

In general a coal-fired power station requires more land for operational use than a nuclear power station.

Mr. Redmond

To ask the Secretary of State for Energy if he will list by type and location the total land holdings of the Central Electricty Generating Board in the three counties of Yorkshire.

Mr. Michael Spicer

This is an operational matter for the Central Electricity Generating Board. I have asked the chairman to write to the hon. Member.
