To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department when he intends to establish the Radio Authority.

Mr. Waddington

I am setting up the Radio Authority in shadow form on I January 1990. The appointment of Lord Chalfont as chairman has already been announced. I have today appointed the following to become members on 1 January:

  • Mr. John Grant
  • Mr. Richard Hooper
  • Mrs. Jill McIvor
  • Mr. Ranjit Sondhi

One further appointment will be made in due course. Subject to parliamentary approval of the Broadcasting Bill, I intend to establish the authority with its full statutory powers on 1 January 1991.
