To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Science how many children with special educational needs are currently at schools(a) in the north-west and (b) in the Bolton education authority area; and what is the cost to the authority of providing the special education which they need.

The number of pupils with special educational needs in maintained schools in(a) the north-west and (b) Bolton in January 1989 were as follows:

North-West Bolton
(i)Pupils in maintained special schools 15,209 464
(ii)Pupils with statements of special educational needs in maintained ordinary schools 6,375 124
