To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Science whether he will supply the latest figures on the shortage of physical education teachers.

In January 1989 there were 162 vacancies for full-time physical education teachers in maintained secondary schools in England, equivalent to 1.2 per cent. of physical education teachers in post.
