HL Deb 19 December 1989 vol 514 cc249-50WA
Lord Hatch of Lusby

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether they consider that the Energy Efficiency Office has been so successful that its work should now be reduced.

Viscount Ullswater

The Energy Efficiency Office has achieved considerable success in helping the nation to improve its energy efficiency. Since 1983 the EEO has stimulated recurrent annual savings now worth well over £500 million per year, an excellent return on £120 million total expenditure to date. In order to build on this success, the EEO is now targeting key areas of energy use through its best practice programme and other activities. Energy efficiency will remain a high priority over the coming period, and there is no question of the EEO's activities being reduced.
