§ Mr. Alan HowarthThe most recent Government figures are those for January 1989 which I gave in my reply to the hon. Member for Don Valley (Mr. Redmond) on 24 October 1989 at column394. The Department's September survey, which provided a broad indication of the start of term staffing situation, indicated that the position had not worsened since January. The Government will continue to take measures to attract teachers and reduce shortages.
