§ Mr. Lawrence
To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department in how many cases over the most recent 12-month period for which figures are available applications for entry clearance for settlement in the United Kingdom by Pakistani citizens have been(a) granted, (b) refused, (c) followed by an application to enter the United Kingdom as a visitor to be present at the birth of the applicant's child, and (d) that application has been refused on the ground that an application had been made for settlement which had been refused.
§ Mr. Peter Lloyd
The only information available is that in the 12 months ending 30 September 1989, 5,450 applications in Pakistan for entry clearance for settlement in the United Kingdom were granted and 2,010 were refused initially. A total of 9,190 applications for a visit entry clearance were refused in the same period because the applicant did not meet the requirements of immigration rules.
