§ Mr. FreemanEstimates of gross current expenditure per head of population on health and personal social services, in cash and at 1987–88 prices for each year between 1979–80 and 1986–87, the latest year for which these estimates are available are given in the table.
These figures are derived through successive estimations starting with the Department's programme budget analysis, details of which are provided to the Social Services Committee and are published by the Committee in minutes of evidence associated with its report on Public Expenditure on the Social Services 1987 (HC 413). Expenditure on each of the services identified is then apportioned to different age groups from data on the use of services. Due to changes in sources and definitions, data for the earliest years may not be fully consistent with those for later years.
